Tara M. Lyons joined the Executive Office for United States Attorneys in 2010 and currently serves as an Attorney Advisor for the Office of Legal Education’s Distance Education Team.  In this capacity, she is responsible for identifying training needs in civil, criminal, and administrative areas, and developing and recommending innovative delivery options that are cost efficient and timely.  During her tenure with the Office of Legal Education, she has focused on the need to streamline courses, recruit new instructors, increase reliance on electronic resources and increase the capacity and quantity of courses offered. 

After spending three and half years as a Public Defender in Richland County, South Carolina, Tara started her career at the Department of Justice in 2003 as an Assistant United States Attorney in the District of South Carolina.  Her career with the Department has allowed her to prosecute a wide range of federal cases related to violent crimes, narcotics, human trafficking, immigration, child pornography and civil rights violations. In the District of South Carolina, she served as the Project Sentry Coordinator, related to the prevention of school gun violence, and as the Project Safe Childhood Coordinator, responsible for the prosecution of childhood exploitation cases, and the Civil Rights Coordinator. She is a graduate of the University of South Carolina Law School and South Carolina State University.
